Knowing

"Is the new 20 the new 45? It's like you know too much. It's like you lived too much?"

I thought it was interesting Prof. Baldwin said this in class today and it got me thinking a bit more about something I had touched on in a previous post.

I think even just the interconnectedness of today's world plays a big role in this. The Internet and the media and our ability to see what's going on in almost every corner of the world. We don't even have to have lived too much to have seen too much.

When talking about life with a friend of mine a long time back, she said something that made a lot of sense: "The more you know, the harder it is to be happy."

Clearly, this kind of stuck with me because it comes to mind now. And occasionally.

We can no longer lead simple, oblivious lives. Even without being able to get out and explore, the problems and realities of the world can still plague us.

Of course, experiencing the world first-hand is something different. I believe you get more of a gift through personal experience of tragedy, as ironic as that sounds. Without that you just have the knowledge that all these things are out there and there's nothing you can really do.

Cynicism, I know. Yeah, we should all believe we can change the world.

I'm trying to do my part. Through journalism -- telling people's stories. Trying to get others to care.

I don't think most people care. Not enough.
