Starting from a young age I was given a copy of the house keys. Both my parents worked for pretty long hours at a time so I had to let myself in. It wasn't as if I had an older sibling who could accompany me to and from school. In fact, I'm an only child, a scenario I wish I could change but can't. It's an early age but in a way I'm glad I learned independence in my youth. Many events that happened later in life were easier to overcome because of that gained independence and while others had a year on me in schooling, I had independence over them.
Independence is one to add to the not childhood list. As most children are dependent on their parents, I lost a form of dependency when the keys were handed to me. Also, being of an Asian ethnicity, like all others, my parents followed the stereotype of sending me to an after school program where I was dumped to work on SAT work and homework in junior high. Those years were tough but it had me start to learn how to be alone.
