Titanic (cont.)

To digress a little bit, Titanic also contains many Binaries. One specifically that is easily seen is Love and Hate. Love is referring to her love for Jack and Jack’s love for her, and hates referring to her fiancées hate for Jack, Rose’s hate for her mother, and Jacks hate for the rich people who are in first class. Another binary in the film is life and death; for instance, Rose lives and Jack dies. These binaries can also be used to outline other scenarios and characters in the film.
Now to get back on track, Hamartia is also seen in the film differing from character to character For example, Jack and Rose both have the same Hamartia, their love for each other, which is in turn the cause of death for Jack. Rose’s mother’s tragic flaw is her love of money, this causes her in turn to lose her daughter and family. In addition, Rose’s fiancée has the same Hamartia as her mother. He loses her because greed consumes him and he in truth loves money more than he loves Rose. Also, the more I think about I find that the captain’s hamartia is his arrogance. He truly believes the ship is unsinkable and therefore puts no effort in his job. Then again, that last one is just my personal opinion, I could be wrong.
